Feds Ask $520M from AstraZeneca for its Antipsychotic Drug, Seroquel

Ever heard of AstraZeneca? It's a drug manufacturer based out of Wilmington, Delaware. And earlier this week, it faced off against the feds-- Attorney General Eric Holder and Health and Services Secretary Kathleen Sebelius, to be exact.

AstraZeneca was allegedly marketing it's drug, Seroquel, for uses that were not approved by federal drug regulators. Some of these uses were insomnia and various psychiatric conditions.

On Tuesday, the federal government came to a settlement of $520 million with AstraZeneca, in a resolution of claims involving illegal marketing of the company's antipsychotic drug Seroquel.  

The suit is of particular interest to Pennsylvania personal injury attorneys because the settlement as filed in Philadelphia.

The issue of "off-label" use is a huge concern to drug regulators. Off-label use generally refers to the use of a drug for purposes other than those authorized and approved by the FDA. Although doctors can prescribe medication as they see fit, drug companies are prohibited from marketing medications outside of their FDA approved use.
